Alghero is one of the most popular tourist cities in Sardinia, surrounded by beautiful beaches.
Historic center with narrow streets full of characteristic little shops and its Catalan monuments such as the Cathedral of Santa Maria, the Cloister of San Francesco, the Civic Theater and above all the city walls where in the evening you can admire a splendid sunset with a view of Capo Caccia. It is recommended to visit the Diocesan Museum in the historic center and the Coral Museum where some works of art created by renowned artists are kept.
Between January and February, for sports lovers, underwater fishing competitions are organized. Also during the same period, the week of Carnival takes place, with floats, musical groups, and a big final fritter party in Piazza Civica. The Alghero winter is also characterized by the famous Bogamarì festival, or sea urchin festival, where tastings are organized to savor one of the most delicious foods that the sea of Alghero produces.
March and April are dedicated to Easter ceremonies. The Holy Week rite is celebrated with numerous and evocative processions, including the Via Crucis, the Procession of the Mysteries, and the Iscravamentu (the deposition of Jesus).
In May it's time for the famous Alghero "Scala Piccada" car race (the road to Villanova Monteleone) and the Shepherds' Festival for the Shearing, organized by various agritourisms.
Between June and September the long summer season of Alghero opens, where the many beaches with crystal-clear water that have made the city famous all over the world take center stage.
Winter period, the most important event is undoubtedly New Year's Eve (Cap d'Any d'Alguer), a whole week with festivals, musical groups in the square, open museums and various entertainment shows, culminating in the feast of St. Sylvester, to bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new one.
Located in the north-western area of the island of Sardinia, "the little Barcelona", as it is known, experienced its first development in the 12th century thanks to the Doria family. It was later conquered, in 1384, by the Catalan-Aragonese expedition led by King Peter the Ceremonious. The new settlement repopulated Alghero with people of Iberian origin and, for military reasons, the walls were expanded and towers higher than the previous ones were built.
In 1501 it became a city, reopened its doors to foreigners and there was an increase in the urban layout within the walls.
In 1720 it passed to the Savoy but Catalan customs were never abandoned.
Following the further expansion of the city, the city walls were demolished, today present only on the sea side.
In 1943 an Allied bombing damaged the historic center which, however, is still appreciated today for its Mediterranean-Catalan characteristics. The processing of coral has been important over the centuries.
